Attendance Allowance has gone up again from April 2026. If you, a parent or a partner are over State Pension age and need help with everyday personal care, it is well worth checking whether you can claim. Many people who are entitled never apply.
New rates from April 2026
- Lower rate: £76.70 a week (up from £73.90), for frequent help or supervision during the day, or supervision at night.
- Higher rate: £114.60 a week (up from £110.40), for help or supervision day and night, or for people who are terminally ill.
Figures are from GOV.UK for the 2026/27 tax year. At the higher rate, that is almost £6,000 a year.
The key facts
- It is not means-tested: savings, income and home ownership do not matter.
- It is tax-free, and you can spend it however you like.
- You must have reached State Pension age. Younger people may be able to claim Personal Independence Payment instead.
- You usually need to have needed help for six months. Under special rules for people nearing the end of life, claims are fast-tracked and paid at the higher rate.
- You do not have to be receiving care already. It is based on the help you need.
Tips for a successful claim
- Be specific. Say how often you need help, how long tasks take and what happens when no one is there.
- Describe your worst days, not your best.
- Include night-time needs, such as getting to the toilet or being unsettled.
- Mention safety: falls, near misses, forgetting the cooker, confusion.
- Get a supporting statement from a family member, carer or health professional.
- Ask for help. Age UK, Citizens Advice and other charities will help fill in the form for free.
Claim forms are on GOV.UK, or call the Attendance Allowance helpline on 0800 731 0122.
Knock-on benefits
An award of Attendance Allowance can increase Pension Credit and Housing Benefit, and may mean a family carer can claim Carer’s Allowance. If the person has dementia, they may also qualify for a Council Tax reduction.
Putting it towards care at home
Many families use Attendance Allowance to pay for regular home care: a morning visit to help with washing and dressing, a hot lunch, or a weekly companionship visit. See our Attendance Allowance page and our guide to paying for home care in Essex.
