Getting out and about is good for body and mind. A change of scene, fresh air and something new to talk about can lift anyone’s mood, and for older people who spend a lot of time at home, a day out can be the highlight of the month.
Saffron Walden and the surrounding area have plenty of places to enjoy at a gentle pace. Here are some ideas for this summer.
Audley End House and Gardens
Just outside Saffron Walden, English Heritage’s Audley End is a grand Jacobean house with landscaped parkland, a walled kitchen garden and a café. The grounds are lovely for a slow stroll on a fine day. Check access information before you go, as some parts of the house involve stairs.
Bridge End Garden
In the heart of Saffron Walden, Bridge End Garden is a peaceful Victorian garden with a rose garden, hedge maze and plenty of benches. It is free to visit and close to the town centre, so it is easy to combine with lunch or a coffee.
Saffron Walden Museum and the town
Saffron Walden Museum sits beside the castle ruins and has collections covering local history and natural history. The town itself, with its market, independent shops and tea rooms, is perfect for an unhurried morning out.
Saffron Hall
For music lovers, Saffron Hall hosts concerts by world-class orchestras and performers. An afternoon or evening concert makes a special outing.
Thaxted
A short drive away, Thaxted has its medieval Guildhall, a beautiful church and John Webb’s Windmill. The town is compact, with cafés and pubs for a rest. Read more about home care in Thaxted.
Hatfield Forest
Near Takeley, the National Trust’s Hatfield Forest has ancient trees, a lake and a café. Some paths can be uneven or muddy, so check routes before visiting.
Tips for a comfortable day out
- Keep it short. A couple of hours is often better than a whole day.
- Check access: parking, toilets, seating, ramps and whether wheelchairs can be borrowed.
- Avoid the hottest part of the day in summer, and take water, a hat and sun cream. See our hot weather advice.
- Bring medication and anything needed for continence.
- Go at quieter times, particularly for someone living with dementia.
- Plan a rest stop: a café or a bench with a view.
